HomeANG REPUBLIKA NG MUSIKAJul 22, 2007
Philippines, a country that is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity, gave birth to, REPUBLIKA NG MUSIKA”, our nation's new local world music community of bands and musicians. We stand proud with our efforts to explore chants, songs, beats, crafts and rhythms that we inherited through generations. We are the descendants of musicians who proudly passed-on a musical path that paved-way to several highly respected local world music bands, singers and musicians; such as Pen-pen, Grupong Pendong, Asin, Joey Ayala, Bob Aves, Pinikpikan, Grace Nono, Makiling Ensemble and many others.

It all started when the first three bands of Rn'M (syalaM, Talahib and Kadangyan) sat down and talked about promoting their type of music to a much wider and yet very pop oriented type of audience, within the country. What seemed to be a very exclusive type of music that can only be heard and appreciated by the tourists, elite, artists, and in various cultural events, is now ready to be a big part of an industry that never failed to promote and only support pop artists and musicians. We believe that our music belongs to the people and that this community will help us promote, share and preserve the pride that we Filipinos should have towards our diverse cultural heritage.

The very first REPUBLIKA NG MUSIKA event took place at Conspiracy (11th of September, 2006, at a bar located along Visayas Ave., Quezon City) through the efforts of Kadangyan, Talahib and syalaM, which lead to a series of Rn'M shows in various bars around Metro Manila. Along the way, Rn'M came across other remarkable bands and musicians that are willing to help and work for the same goal. The following bands are actively involved:

Talahib. Noun. A wild but soft grass leaving wounds to ones skin when exposed and scratched to it.

Talahib. The Band. Plays world music with added influences of folk, reggae, blues, jazz, alternative, kundiman, and other local and tribal languages. Its soft spoken personality and their socially and environmentally relevant songs visualize the true colors of Filipinos specially that of the indigenous people.

Talahib is currently in the process of recording their EP at Womb Works Studio.

Lakbay Lahi utilizes instruments commonly used by ethnic groups in the Philippines. They produce sounds which they themselves cannot perfectly replicate on separate performances. ‘Free-form' is practiced on every organic sound art piece. The basic melodies are used as a foundation, but there is always a level of uniqueness between performances. Emotional, psychological and spiritual status of the performers at the very moment of performance contributes to the color and texture of the organic sound art piece.

To date, Lakbay Lahi has released an independently-produced album (Self-titled, © 2004), the music from which have been used in numerous video and film productions. Lakbay Lahi’s live gigs have included private events and countless conventions, student, art, and environmental events, including one leg of the Miss Earth International 2006 pageant.

syalaM is Malays spelled backwards, the origin of most Asians, particularly Filipinos. The band invokes their listeners to spread “the word” and be a part of a positive cultural, environmental and social change. syalaM provides a broad range of musicality, ranging from reggae to blues, folk dance to tribal ethnic, and jazz to funk. A musical trip that breaks all age, race, and music barriers... it does not discriminate... the way music is meant to be. They’re currently promoting their new album, “Tayo”, which was released under Mah Music Records.

syalaM recently released their debut Single “CONGRESSMAN” along with its music video, which startled many of their listeners with its blatant humor and rapid climb to 1 on NU107’s Stairway to Seven daily countdown.

Their music video is currently being aired on MYX and is currently featured on GMA News web site’s most popular video section. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YkiAFak66A) (http://youscoop.gmanews.tv)

In its early days, Makiling fused traditional music with Western classical music with some doses of modern popular music such as rock, pop, and jazz resulting in an engaging but somewhat formal musical style.

They now have two albums released independently.

The new album "Patintero Sa Ilalim ng Buwan" is a follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album, Medyo Modern. The new sound stretches the boundaries of world music by incorporating new elements. "The new songs span a greater diversity of styles; it features elements of Maguindanao music, Kalinga, T'boli music, blues-rock, reggae, salsa, ska, Western country music, Indian music, and Spanish flamenco".
